Tomato and onion sandwiches. I remember as a very young girl eating these divine sandwiches that Auntie Gwen made. Over the years I would remind her of how much I enjoyed these sandwiches and the memory gave me the warm and fuzzies.
I don’t think I’ve ever come across another couple like Auntie Gwen and Uncle Bill. Gary, Michael and Phillip had the best childhood. Their house was always filled with fun and laughter, and I was lucky to be on the fringe of that. Auntie Gwen had the most mischievous and wicked sense of humour and I’m sure each of us has a hilarious story to share. 1 that still cracks me up today was when she’d learned self hypnosis to combat her migraines. Auntie Gwen being Auntie Gwen, then decided to hypnotise the neighbours. I’m sure that poor woman still wonders why she crossed the road and jumped into the pool!
On a recent visit Auntie Gwen surprised me by making me the highly esteemed tomato and onion sandwich and it was a great reminder that some things are best left as a treasured memory!
Auntie Gwen would always tell me, you’re the daughter I never had and I’d respond with, you’re the mother I needed. I’ll miss our weekly phone calls, I’ll miss hearing your voice and feeling your love. Rest in peace Auntie Gwen in the loving arms of Uncle Bill, Phillip, Val, Ted, your parents and all other loved ones gone before you. You’ll remain as always in a big piece of my heart
