To our darling Amma,

You are too precious to be forgotten,
And too priceless to be ever replaced.
You were one in a million, and you’ll always be
Our angel who loved us, cared for us and guided us throughout our life,
Even though you may not be here to hug or hold,
The warmth of your energy will never leave us.

The pain of you leaving was unbearable
But I know God saw that he was missing an angel
He put his arms around you and asked you to come back as your work was done on Earth
I’m sure Thaththi might have something to do with it
As both of you shared a love so rare there are no words to explain the bond between you two.

You were the sunlight in our family
You were the tree we all leant on
You were the apple of my father’s eyes
You made us feel safe no matter what troubles were there
You baked us cakes, made us fried rice in the morning, walked us to school, helped Thaththa throw parties every weekend
You taught us right from wrong and instilled us with good values
You always put our needs ahead of yours and unconditionally loved us
You made sure we were never hungry and also anyone who visited our home left with a full stomach
You complimented Thaththi in so many ways to ensure every house we lived in was a warm home full of beautiful memories.

This is not goodbye
We know your energy will continue to be all around us showering endless, unconditional love
You are free now Ammi to be the vibrant, adventurous energy you are; who was a champion sportswoman, adventurous & deep lover, caring mother and one of the most loved people in her family who all called you “nanga”
Even though you are out of sight,
We will always look up at the sky and know you will always be there high up in the clouds for Pinky and I
You will live forever in our hearts & we will love you, cherish you and remember you always.

We miss you Ammi

From the day I opened my eyes in this world, you held my hand, lifted me, nurtured me, taught me good from the bad, and made us into the people we are today amma.

Thaththa, pinky, and I never gave up on each other and we continue to hold your hand through this difficult time. Your energy, I will never forget as it was the warmest energy in the world and where i felt safe, happy no matter what I was going through.

I will forever hold onto your energy amma as our bond will never break ammi. You always taught me to be understanding, loving, caring, live a life that doesn’t hurt anyone and most of all see the good in everyone.

I don’t have words to explain what you mean to me amma. I’m having so many feelings I don’t know how to express at the moment. Love you always and unconditionally as you did throughout our life.

I hope I can be as half as good as the person you are amma.

    Daearest Nanga,
You were a courageous lady and bore your ill health with a lot of fortitude and continued to care and look after your family with great care and affection.
You were a loving and caring wife to your husband and an exceptional mother to your two children – Varuna and Pinky of whom you were always proud of their significant achievements both academically and in their chosen careers.
You were the youngest of the three children in my late wife Sandapani’s family and you were part of a well knitted family.
With your migration to New Zeland with the family in 1994 and subsequently to Australia we did not see you often but kept in touch. My last memory you was in 2017 when you visited us in Sri Lanka.

May your soul rest in peace Nanga. Sunil Ayiah and Sasala Duwa

    My darling Nanga Akka,
I am not really good at these farewell things, and I really didn’t know what to write. But here’s an attempt reminiscing about our times together.

I got to really know you whilst living in Melbourne even though we were first cousins. Every time I visited your house you never let me leave without your hospitality. I remember how you used to feed both Pinky and Varuna on the run before they left for uni or work. We used sit at the dining table by the window and you would recall stories from your childhood growing up. You were so very fond of your cousins, they were your world. I was one of the youngest in our families so I didn’t know many things about my older siblings and my cousins. I would sit with you for hours at times just listening and chatting. You were a great storyteller about our families and I remember vividly how you used to always recall specific interactions with my father, mother and my siblings. You would always ask me about each and every one of my siblings and how they were doing. At times we would call my sister Nelum and have a few laughs on speaker phone.

I would make these silly jokes and you would laugh. Mahinda Aiya hears the commotion and wakes up and we all have a good laugh. After Nanga Akka’s hospitality then Mahinda Aiya starts the process of trying to feed me again 😂😂. We have a few more cups of tea, more sweets, and hours flew by. You would tell me about my childhood and about the times when we visited your ancestral home in Nugegoda. You would fill me in with all the details of your recent trips to Sri Lanka and the precious moments you spent with our cousins travelling around the country. Your eyes were glowing your face was beautiful and full of smiles every time we spoke about family. Then Mahinda Aiya would play the recordings from the trips. When I wanted to leave you always asked me to stay a little longer. As I walked out the door you would say “Malli ayey enna honday. Call karanna oney ney enna. Ikmanata enna”

Great times. Quality times. Relaxing times. Times I won’t have with you again but they are etched in my fondest memories of you. Thank you so much for being so warm, sincere, benevolent, so loving. My world was just that much sweeter and better having you around. So long Nanga Akka….”Ayeth enna api langatama apiwa balanna”

    With love Sanjaya Malli

My thoughts are with you and Pinky ❤ I will always have Aunty in my heart for taking care of me as a toddler in our first years in New Zealand while my amma and thatha were studying. Both her and Uncle hold a special place within my family as I am sure they do amongst many other families for whom they have gone out of their way to care for. Immigrating to a new country is very difficult but your parents compassion made it so much easier for those who came, despite themselves also being recent immigrants. With parents like them, it’s no surprise to me how Tilini and yourself have grown to become such strong and caring people as well. I’m so glad I was able to visit Aunty during my last trip to Melbourne
